  • “An attorney’s job is to take something simple, and complicate it”. Anon I have had to deal with many lawyers over the years, and frankly, it has always been a struggle to withhold the impulse one gets to beat them into sawdust after about five minutes. Most are so arrogant and pretentious it is sometimes difficult to find a reason not to. But, just when my distaste for this foul profession was about to reach its zenith, Elizabeth Rivera came along. She is an island of ethics in a wasteland devoid of honor. She is an almost unheard of find...an honest, caring, and truly outstanding Attorney at law. Why such an intelligent and principled person like Ms. Rivera chose to lie in a nest of vipers is a question only she can answer. But I'm certainly glad she did, for she is what they fear most; a sincerely decent human being who can play ball in their park... and win. If you haven't figured it out, I place lawyers in that little group of objects I dislike intensely. This group is populated by such things as body lice, warts, fashion designers, and STD's. In short, all things God may have created, but serve no useful purpose. But, you might argue, lawyers are needed for our system of justice. I would counter by saying that we no longer have a justice system; "justice" died a long and miserable death at the hands of attorneys years ago. What we have is a skewed legal system which is almost totally lacking fairness. A system designed to serve only those who can afford it; or, in many cases, profit from it. Ah, yes, "profit" does seem to be the operative word in today's world. Pin it So, with that being said, you may wonder why I would sing the praises of any attorney. Here's why: It was a case concerning a predator lender (Champion Mortgage) trying to wrongfully foreclose on a reverse mortgage they held. The defendant was a 72 year old single woman with MS and onset alzheimer's disease, who subsisted on Social Security. I spent months trying to find a law firm to represent her...to no avail. But it wasn't just law firms that backed away from aiding her; other rejections came from such places as the Florida State Attorney General's Office, Legal Aid, Legal Services, the Federal Consumer Protection Bureau, and even the ACLU. And then, just one month away from the trial date, I had the good luck to find Tiller & Rivera Law. Elizabeth Rivera not only took the case, she did it at a price the ailing woman could actually afford. In fact, I would venture to say it is highly doubtful that Ms. Rivera made a dime on this case; she probably lost money by taking it. Proving to me that there is at least one noble person left in the world after all. No, I'm not fond of the legal profession. But now, I'm a fan of at least one Law Firm.
